Cornelius is Mecklenburg County’s youngest town, incorporated in 1905. Although the Town was originally incorporated as ‘Liverpool’, the Town’s name was soon changed to Cornelius to honor J.B. Cornelius who was the principal stockholder in the area’s cotton mill. Cornelius has a population today of nearly 25,000.
